چکیده

This paper is based on a series of 4 lectures delivered at Groups St Andrews 2013. The main theme of the lectures was distinguishing finitely generated residually finite groups by their finite quotients. The purpose of this paper is to expand and develop the lectures. The paper is organized as follows. In §2 we collect some questions that motivated the lectures and this article, and in §3 discuss some examples related to these questions. In §4 we recall profinite groups, profinite completions and the formulation of the questions in the language of the profinite completion. In §5, we recall a particular case of the question of when groups have the same profinite completion, namely Grothendieck’s question. In §6 we discuss how the methods of L2-cohomology can be brought to bear on the questions in §2, and in §7, we give a similar discussion using the methods of the cohomology of profinite groups. In §8 we discuss the questions in §2 in the context of groups arising naturally in low-dimensional topology and geometry, and in §9 discuss parafree groups. Finally in §10 we collect a list of open problems that may be of interest.

Continuous cohomology and homology of profinite groups

Let G be a profinite group with a countable basis of neighborhoods of the identity. A cohomology and homology theory for the group G with non-discrete topological coefficients is developed, improving previous expositions of the subject (see [Wi], [R–Z] and [S-W]). Though the category of topological G-modules considered is additive but not abelian, there is a theory of derived functors. All stan...

Modular Representations of Profinite Groups

Our aim is to transfer several foundational results from the modular representation theory of finite groups to the wider context of profinite groups. We are thus interested in profinite modules over the completed group algebra k[[G]] of a profinite group G, where k is a finite field of characteristic p. We define the concept of relative projectivity for a profinite k[[G]]-module. We prove a cha...

Homotopy fixed points for profinite groups emulate homotopy fixed points for discrete groups

If K is a discrete group and Z is a K-spectrum, then the homotopy fixed point spectrum Z is Map∗(EK+, Z) K , the fixed points of a familiar expression. Similarly, if G is a profinite group and X is a discrete G-spectrum, then X is often given by (HG,X), where HG,X is a certain explicit construction given by a homotopy limit in the category of discrete G-spectra. Thus, in each of two common equi...

An Analogue of Brumer’s Criterion for Hypercohomology Groups and Class Formations

The aim of this paper is to obtain a criterion determining the strict cohomological dimension of a profinite group. The strict cohomological dimension of a profinite group G, written scdpG, is the smallest integer n such that the p-primary component of Hn+1(G,M) vanishes for all discrete G-modules M , where p is a prime number. There is also the notion of cohomological dimension of G, denoted b...
